Doug Sutton is a hands-on operations professional and a proponent of the fundamentals of operations excellence. Doug developed his keen perspective and unique insights over 25 years in operations, during which time he served in a number of leadership positions and in multiple industries.
Doug began his career at Harris Corporation, RF Communications Group in Rochester, New York. There, he spent more than 10 years developing operations knowledge in the manufacture of high-frequency radio communication equipment for the United States Department of Defense and for developing countries. It was during this time that Doug first implemented the principles of Lean, process management, and metrics-based business performance management, earning him recognition for his skills in process engineering and operations management.
Doug was recruited to Bausch & Lomb’s eyewear division in the summer of 1989. After spending four years developing a manufacturing center of excellence in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, Doug served three years as the manager of engineering and operations at Bausch & Lomb’s San Antonio sunglass fabrication, assembly, and distribution facility. While there, Doug worked with a hard-charging group of operations leaders to develop a manufacturing center of excellence, achieving ISO9002 certification.
Transitioning from manufacturing to financial services, Doug joined Fidelity Wide Processing, a division of Fidelity Investments, in 1997. It was here, with the aid of a very talented group of operations professionals, that Doug developed a complete understanding of the basics of operations excellence. With a clear vision and strategy, Doug and his colleagues successfully applied manufacturing concepts such as the Balanced Scorecard, Lean, 5S, and Six-Sigma to transform Fidelity Wide Processing into a world-class operation and premier service provider, winning back-to-back Gold Awards in the annual AQP National Team Excellence competition. In 2007, wanting to explore new challenges, Doug took an operations excellence leadership position in the insurance -industry. After three years in the industry, Doug left to launch Operations Excellence Services LLC, a firm dedicated to helping business and operations leaders in their own journeys toward excellence.
“Doug Sutton presents in a concise manner the steps that leaders
in any industry need to take to achieve what some may think is an
unattainable goal – excellence. Those leaders willing to embrace
and adopt these fundamental principles will indeed attain excellence.
The journey toward operations excellence begins with a single step.
Let the journey begin…”
